How not to dye

  1. Put fiber and dye in crockpot, turn on.
  2. Walk away and go watch some TV.
  3. Forget about crockpot.
  4. Remember when the smell of wet wool permeates the house.
  5. Return to find boiling and felted fiber.

     6. Whatever you do, don't go and do the same thing two days later.

Sigh...will have to think of something to do with 12 oz of felted Corriedale. Anyone have any suggestions?

A bit lost in translation

Having spent part of February wandering around northern India in a completely overwhelmed daze (the colors! the textures! the smells!), I spent part of the weekend trying to transfer some of that inspiration to fiber.

My first source of inspiration is the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur - a towering edifice of pink sandstone with cream accents, all silhouetted against a brilliant blue sky. Something like this.

The Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

The Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

This was the women's palace, and all the carved stone screens were to enable them to look out at the world without being seen. What's really funny is that the building is now flat up against a busy street filled with small shops and carts selling fruit and veg. It's not quite as isolated and majestically quiet as the pictures seem to imply!

I spent a lot of time playing around with oranges and pinks, and I think I've finally got the balance right. We'll see how things go tomorrow.

Logo! Logo! Logo!

I am very excited about my new logo, designed by my lovely knitting and spinning compatriot SpiffyJenny. We talked about a logo for the first time waaay back in December, but with the craziness of the holidays and various and sundry other things, we didn't finalize anything until last week. Today she emailed me the final images, and I am thrilled.

I love what she came up with, from my seriously garbled and uninspired ramblings. It's this kind of thing that makes me appreciate graphic designs skills even more then I did before.

The dyepots are cooking

Sadly, I have spent much of the period of time since Christmas sick or recovering from being sick, including being on antibiotics for the first time in about seven years. But over the last week the energy has come back, and I've got some new pretties in the works.

This time around the inspiration is (in no particular order) George R. R. Martin, woodland amphibians, and nanometer size particles. We'll see which ones actually make it into the shop over the next few days.

I'm hoping to have everything dyed and photographed and packaged by 1st February, so check back in that day to see if the update has gone live. Til then, happy spinning!
